Beyond 5G: OPPO presents its vision of 6G and the future of connected intelligence at the IEEE ICC 2019
SHENZHEN - OPPO presented its vision for a future of connected intelligence this week at the 53rd IEEE International Conference on Communications (ICC), held in Shanghai from May 20 to 24. With a 2019 theme, Empowering Intelligent Communications, ICC brings together the best global experts from industry and academia to share visions and ideas on the latest technologies and innovations in communications. On May 22, Henry Tang, Director of Standards Research and 5G Chief Scientist at OPPO, delivered a keynote address at the conference highlighting OPPO's commitment to driving future generations of connectivity. In his speech, titled B5G (Beyond 5G) & 6G : Connecting Intelligence, Tang offered a glimpse of a future where, "after the launch of 5G, as AI and telecommunications technologies continue to strengthen and to improve each other,
Henry Tang, OPPO Standards Research Director and 5G Chief Scientist, delivers a speech
During his speech, Tang shared OPPO's perspectives and vision for the evolution of an “intelligence era” thanks to next generation connectivity. Tang described this evolution of connected intelligence - from 5G to B5G to 6G - as a system "for AI, through AI and AI", and a transformation that will radically change the way we live and work.
In the short term - the “for AI” stage - 5G allows new connections between humans and things that can be exploited to strengthen a range of existing vertical applications like consumer IoT, IoT d and HD video. At the same time, the adoption of AI companies like autonomous driving, augmented reality and virtual reality is about to accelerate. Faced with autonomous driving, ubiquitous reality and other artificial intelligence applications with high demands on computing power, storage and low latency, 5G opens up broadband channels in real time for realize capabilities such as "cloud perception,
In the future, Tang envisions a world shared by human users and intelligent agents, with B5G and 6G as key catalysts for "Human-Thing-Intelligence" interconnectivity. As technologies evolve, in the next step - “through AI” - the goal is to improve the 5G system by introducing AI capabilities such as neural networks and machine learning. The implementation of AI will correct the imperfections and inaccuracies of existing wireless telecommunications theories, making the 5G ecosystem faster, more delicate and more efficient in order to meet the increasing demands of network performance.
Looking into the more distant 6G era, Tang explained that more and more businesses will be run largely without human intervention. In this intelligent future, the scenarios in which machines and AI will also interface will increase, thus creating a demand for swarming systems, whose capacities are greater than those of its individual agents. Henry Tang called it "collective intelligence". A new business model that will emerge during this “AI” stage will focus on smart connections between smart devices. Besides traditional data such as multimedia data, sensor data and control data, a new type of data that will occupy the 6G network will be "intelligent" AI-driven transmissions, which means that the devices will be able share and transmit AI messages between themselves. As we know it today with 5G, 6G technologies will again have to overcome a series of challenges to improve performance, such as the dramatic improvement in speed, latency, reliability, coverage, energy efficiency, connection density, precision and security. "With the iterative evolution of technologies, the whole of human society - and indeed the world around us - will achieve an unprecedented level of interconnectivity. At OPPO, we welcome and seize this exciting new opportunity to help usher in a new era of connected intelligence, ”said Tang. the whole of human society - and even the world around us - will achieve an unprecedented level of interconnectivity. As a pioneer of 5G, OPPO created its first dedicated 5G team in 2015 and has since invested heavily in next generation technology in areas such as standardization, R&D and applications. With a long-standing commitment to the global development of 5G, OPPO is one of the main contributors to 3GPP among smartphone brands, having submitted more than 2,800 technical proposals to the authoritative 5G standards body.
This month, OPPO demonstrated its leadership position in the emerging era of smart connectivity with the launch of Reno 5G, the company's first 5G smartphone and the first commercially available 5G handset in Europe. Launched for the first time in Switzerland on May 1 on the Swisscom network, Reno 5G was launched in the United Kingdom on May 20 in partnership with EE and should soon be deployed in other markets. OPPO is also actively exploring the convergence of 5G with AI, big data, the cloud and other key advanced technologies, and will continue to work with partners around the world to deliver next-generation products and services to users of the whole world.
At ICC 2019, OPPO presented its main 5G capabilities on site with the new Reno 5G. Visitors to the OPPO stand had the opportunity to discover 5G cloud games on Reno 5G devices connected to a 5G network. With an ultra-fast, low-latency 5G connection, Reno 5G allows users to play HD games that are loaded and executed entirely in the cloud, enabling smooth and cutting-edge gaming experiences without having to download large files.
